ANTWERP - Mercedes Wagner scored as time expired to lift the Fairview Lady Apaches over Antwerp 38-36 in the Green Meadows Conference girls basketball opener for both schools Friday night at the home of the Archers.

Tied at 36-36, the blue-and-white had an opportunity but turned the ball over with six seconds to go.

Wagner then took advantage, scoring the game winner to lift the Apaches to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in the league.

Fairview jumped in front 11-7 at the end of one quarter and the Apaches widened that margin in the second period. The black-and-gold added a dozen points while limiting Antwerp to 10 as Fairview seized a 23-17 advantage at the midway point of the contest.

Antwerp sliced into the deficit in the third quarter.

The Lady Archers outpointed Fairview 10-4 in the stanza to knot the game at 27-27 entering the final period.

The two teams battled throughout the final eight minutes with the Lady Apaches coming up with the big layup at the end to record the victory.

Kiersten Cline paced the Apaches with a dozen points while Wagner chipped in 11 and Michelle Marshall added nine markers.

Riley Mealer and Olivia Ricica completed the Fairview scoring with four and two points, respectively.

Heather Oberlin topped Antwerp with 12 points and Astianna Coppes added 11 for the Archers, who fall to 3-6 in all contests and 0-1 in the conference.

The blue-and-white also got six points from Karsyn Brumett while Tiera Gomez posted four and Lydia Brewer scored a basket. Chelsea Johanns also hit a free throw for the Lady Archers.
