JEWELL - Kadyn Radzik hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the
first inning to put Tinora on top to stay and the Rams avenged a Green
Meadows Conference loss to Antwerp with a 10-2 non-league victory on
Thursday.
After the Archers went on top 1-0 on a Chase Clark
single and Luke Krouse RBI double in the top of the first, Tinora
countered with a Nolan Schafer leadoff walk and Radzik home run to left.
The Rams added an unearned run in the second before Antwerp countered
with a Clark double and Krouse run-scoring single in the third.
However,
Tinora tallied another unearned run in the fourth and then tacked on
five in the fifth, four unearned, knocking out Antwerp starting pitcher
Reid Lichty. The Rams then closed out the scoring with one more run in
the sixth.
“The game started out the way we wanted and was close
through the first three,” noted Antwerp head coach Zac Feasby, whose
Archers defeated Tinora 9-8 earlier in the season in a GMC contest.
“Although Reid gave up an early home run, I liked the way he battled
back the rest of the game. We just made way too many defensive mistakes
behind him.”
Five Antwerp errors proved too much to overcome
against Tinora, the seventh-rated team in the state in Division III by
Prep Baseball Report.
Krouse finished with a pair of singles, a
double and two RBIs while Clark hit a single and double scoring both
Antwerp runs. But the remainder of the lineup for the Archers could
muster just one hit off of Tinora hurler Nolan Schafer, who tossed a
six-hit complete game with eight strikeouts and one walk.
“We
started out pretty good on offense, but when we got down our earlier
line drives turned into flyouts because I think we were trying to do too
much,” Feasby said.
The loss dropped the state’s seventh-rated
team in Ohio in Division IV by Prep Baseball Report to 12-4 on the
season, with the GMC finale on tap Friday against Fairview. A win and
the Archers earn a share of the conference title with Wayne Trace and
Tinora.
“Overall, I'm glad we played a quality opponent like Tinora to prepare for the tournament next week,” Feasby concluded.
