HAVILAND - With four minutes left in Monday’s girls basketball game with Woodlan, Wayne Trace’s girls basketball team trailed the visiting Warriors 51-37 and appeared ready to drop its second straight contest.

However, the Lady Raiders had other ideas and used a Claire Sinn three-pointer with six seconds on the clock to rally for a 57-55 win over Woodlan to wrap up the 2019 portion of the season.

With the win, Wayne Trace improves to 7-3 on the season while the Lady Warriors drop to 10-5 in all games.

The Raider comeback should give a confidence boost to the red, white and blue as they open Green Meadows Conference play on Friday by hosting Tinora.

“The girls never gave up,” noted Lady Raider head coach Bethany DeJarnett. “They kept battling and then Miriam and Claire hit some big shots for us. Rachel played very well tonight too. It was just a good team effort and is a good way to go into conference play on Friday.”

Leading 47-37, Woodlan suffered a huge blow when senior point guard Addison Bayman was fouled going to the basket and went down with an injury.

Although junior Alicia McMahan stepped up and hit the two free throws in place of Bayman, the Lady Warriors were not the same team without their standout point guard.

Avah Smith added a pair of foul shots to put Woodlan on top 51-37 before Wayne Trace stormed back.

A Miriam Sinn three-pointer along with a Rachel Stoller basket trimmed the Raider deficit to 51-42 but a Taya Kitzmiller basket put the Warriors on top 53-42.

Baskets by Claire Sinn and Gracie Shepherd, off of a Rachel Stoller assist, along with a Miriam Sinn trey sliced the Raider deficit to 53-49.

After two Dakotah Krohn charity tosses gave Woodlan a 55-49 advantage, the Warriors would not score again.

Gracie Shepherd connected on two free throws and Claire Sinn followed with a three-pointer to get the Raiders within 55-54 with 18 seconds remaining.

Following a Warrior turnover, the red, white and blue went back to Claire Sinn to a triple out of the corner for a 57-55 advantage at the six second mark.

Woodlan did get a quality shot attempt but Gabby Joyce’s attempt was off the mark and the Raiders held on for the two-point win.

“The girls made big plays at key times for us tonight,” added the Raider mentor. “This is a good win against a very quality opponent.”

Woodlan jumped out to an 18-15 margin after one quarter before the Warriors widened the lead in the second quarter.

The Lady Warriors scored nine points in the period compared to six for Wayne Trace as Woodlan expanded the margin to 27-21 at the break. Woodlan held a 40-35 lead at the end of three quarters.

Miriam Sinn bucketed 14 points for the Lady Raiders while dishing out nine assists and grabbing four rebounds. Claire Sinn added a dozen markers with four rebounds and two assists.

Katrina Stoller added ten points, three assists and two steals while Gracie Shepherd picked up ten points and nine rebounds.

Addison Bayman topped Woodlan with 16 points, seven assists, four steals and eight rebounds while Gabby Joyce chipped in 11 markers, three rebounds and three steals.

Woodlan captured the junior varsity contest, defeating the Raiders 23-21.
