AKRON – The Antwerp Archers blanked Mechanicsbsurg 5-0 to win the Division IV State Softball Championship on Sunday morning.

Pitcher Carlie Hanes tied the state record of 15 strikeouts in state DIV play. Hanes also got her 300th strikeout of the season early in the game.

The Antwerp community will celebrate the championship this afternoon. The Antwerp bus will be arriving in town at approximately 4:15 p.m. today. Area residents are asked to line the streets to show support. The bus will go through down town and then to finish at the high school where a welcome home celebration will be held at approx 4:30 p.m.

At the same time, Antwerp is cheering its baseball team, which is state-bound after winning its regional championship Saturday afternoon. The players then drove to Akron to support the girls in their championship game.

The Lady Archers' win is believed to be only the fourth state team championship in Paulding County History. Previous winners were 1960 – Paulding boys track & field; 1991 – Wayne Trace boys basketball; and 1992 – Antwerp volleyball.
