EDGERTON - Wayne Trace improved to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the Green Meadows Conference with a 41-27 win over Edgerton Thursday night in boys basketball action in Williams County.

The Raiders jumped out to a 17-3 lead in the first quarter and never looked back as the red, white and blue stayed in the hunt for a potential conference crown.

Nathan Gerber and Alex Reinhart combined to lead the way for Wayne Trace early on as the duo scored the first 11 Raider points of the game.

After a Reid Miller bucket, another Gerber basket and a Jace Vining two-pointer helped the Raiders take a 17-3 lead late in the opening stanza.

However, Edgerton seized momentum just before the period ended with an Arryn Pahl basket before a Logan Showalter three-pointer at the first quarter buzzer got the Bulldogs within 17-8.

“We came out and played really well early on,” noted Raider head coach Jim Linder. “I thought we did a nice job defensively of putting pressure on them and making them uncomfortable.”

The Bulldogs then cut into the Raider lead further to start the second quarter.

Early baskets by Noah Landel and Craig Blue helped pull Edgerton within 17-12 at the 5:30 mark of the stanza.

“I didn’t think we were playing with that same intensity as we did early on,” added the Wayne Trace mentor. “It was a very physical game and it didn’t have a lot of flow and we didn’t adapt to that very well.”

Neither team could generate much offense the rest of the first half.

Besides a free throw by Miller, Cameron Sinn added a three-pointer for the red, white and blue while Landel picked up a basket for Edgerton to give the Raiders a 21-14 halftime lead.

Gerber and Vining each led the Raiders in the third quarter, scoring four points each, as Wayne Trace expanded the margin to 32-20 entering the final stanza.

“It was just a hard game for both teams with a lot of contact on both ends of the floor,” continued Linder.

Two foul shots by Jaron Cape cut the Bulldog deficit to 32-22 early in the fourth quarter before Wayne Trace put the game away with seven straight Raider points.

A Miller basket ignited the Wayne Trace run, which also got four free throws from Gerber and another foul shot by Miller to make it 39-22.

Gerber led all scorers with 17 points for Wayne Trace while grabbing seven rebounds. Reinhart just missed a double-double with nine markers and ten boards while Miller chipped in six points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Vining also posted six markers, three steals and two rebounds.

Edgerton was paced by Showalter with seven points, five rebounds and two steals while Cape and Colin Gary each bucketed five markers. Cape also picked up boards for the Bulldogs, who fall to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in the league.

The Raider junior varsity squad stayed unbeaten in league play with a 38-24 victory over the Bulldogs.
