ARCHBOLD – Wins and losses are about to become important. But up until now Brian Jacobs has been more interested in seeing improvement.

The Paulding wrestling coach saw what he has been looking for on Saturday at the Archbold Duals, a tournament that was rescheduled from its original date of Jan. 19 due to inclement weather.

“The scores of the matches do not show the progress and improvement that the guys are making,” noted Jacobs, whose wrestlers now get ready for the big events of the season with the Northwest Conference meet set for Feb. 16 and the sectionals a week later. “Individually, they are growing and working on improving.”

The Panthers fell short in all five matches against the strong competition at Archbold, losing to Liberty Center and River Valley by identical scores of 49-3, falling to Lake 60-18, getting beaten by Archbold 63-4 and dropping a 49-6 match to Montpelier.

Adrian Simonin had three wins on the day for Paulding, defeating Graham Cooper of River Valley 2-0, pinning Austin Greene of Lake in 1:01 and decking Weston Dick of Montpelier in 31 seconds. The Paulding 182-pounder narrowly lost 5-3 versus Mason Babcock of Archbold and was pinned by Liberty Center’s Carl Yaney.

Cole Mabis was victorious twice for the Panthers, pinning Owen Johnson of LC in 1:26 and taking a 10-2 major decision over Caleb Panzau of Archbold. The Paulding 170-pounder was edged 4-3 by River Valley’s Luke Mencer and pinned by Lake’s Justin Cole and Montpelier’s Gavin Wurm.

Kolya Paschall won via fall over Jesse Ash of Lake in 4:40 while losing on a pin to LC’s Tyler Kay and Archbold’s Carson Meyer and a 2-0 decision to Levi Westler of River Valley in 152-pound action. Paschall also bumped up to 160 and was pinned by Bryer Bentley of Montpelier.

Jeremiah Smith, at 145, was a forfeit winner versus Lake while losing by fall to Liberty Center’s Andrew Moench, Archbold’s Josh Nofzinger and Montpelier’s Brayden Custer and dropping an 11-2 major decision to Ryan Blanton of River Valley.

Paulding heavyweight Sloan Foster suffered a 2-0 loss to River Valley’s Ian Diven while losing on falls to LC’s Conner Johnson, Lake’s Hunter Dotson, Archbold’s Spencer Simon and Montpelier’s Monte Treesh.
