HAVILAND - On a breezy night in Haviland, it was the visiting Paulding Panthers who took home a 2-1 non-league baseball victory over Wayne Trace in a battle of Paulding County rivalries.

Wayne Trace struck first in the contest, scoring once in the opening frame for an early 1-0 advantage.

Reid Miller opened the inning with a single before a Korbin Slade single moved Miller to second base. Trevor Speice followed with a run-scoring single that would plate Miller before the Panthers escaped further damage and kept it at 1-0.

Paulding answered with single runs in the second and third innings to rally for the 2-1 win, its fifth in a row.

Evan Edwards opened the second inning with a single for Paulding and proceeded to steal second two pitches later.

A Blake McGarvey single then plated Edwards to tie the game at 1-1 at the end of two innings.

Paulding plated the winning run in the top of the third.

Hunter Kauser singled with one out, stole second two pitches later and moved to third on a Carson Shull groundout.

Kauser then came home on a wild pitch to put the Panthers on top for good.

“We came out and got off to a good start,” noted Raider head coach Ryne Jerome. “But then they were able to limit our opportunities offensively and Paulding took advantage of their chances. It was a good battle between two teams and two rivals.”

Braden Zuber, Reid Miller, Korbin Slade and Trevor Speice all had singles for Wayne Trace, which moved to 4-5 on the season.

Haydn Gillett took the loss for the Raiders, throwing three innings giving up two hits, two earned runs and a walk while striking out two.

Grant Baumle tossed the final four frames, allowing one hit and one walk with four strikeouts.

Hunter Kauser picked up the win for Paulding, pitching the complete game surrendering four hits, one earned run and one walk while fanning eight.

Blake McGarvey, Evan Edwards and Hunter Kauser all had hits for the maroon-and-white, which improved its overall record to 6-5.
