Patrick Henry pushed across one run in the top of the sixth and one in the seventh to stun Paulding 5-4 in the Division III sectional finals at Defiance on Saturday afternoon.

“We have nothing to hang our heads about today,” Paulding coach Matt Carr said after the Panthers fell to 12-7 on the season. ”I told the girls that this happens in life. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Today we happened to be on the losing side.”

After PH tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth, Paulding threatened in the bottom of the inning. With two out, Jalynn Parrett hit a single and moved to second on an error. Asia Arellano followed with a single, but Parrett was thrown out at the plate.

“That was the big play of the game,” Carr noted. “Not only was she out, but she was also hurt on the play. That was a huge momentum swing for us and them both.”

The Patriots jumped in front with a three-run first inning before the Panthers tied the game with three in the third. Kaela Lucas led off with a single and Parrett roped an RBI double. Arellano, Haylee Dominique and Gabbie Stallbaum all followed with singles.

Paulding then went in front in the fourth when Morgan Iler opened the frame with a single, moved up on a ground out and scored on a Parrett run-scoring double.

“I am so proud of the girls how they came back today,” Carr said. “Being down 3-0 after one, we came back and took the lead. They just made one more play than us at the end.”

Parrett led an 11-hit Paulding attack with two singles and two doubles while Arellano had a pair of singles.

Dominique surrendered 10 hits in taking the loss, giving up three earned runs.

“We put the ball in play and had great at-bats all day,” Carr said. “Haylee threw the ball extremely well, especially after we made some adjustments after the first inning.”

PH, which beat Ottawa-Glandorf 9-0 in the sectional semifinals to advance to Saturday’s final, will play Elmwood in the district semis.
