BRYAN - It was not the tune-up for the biggest week of the season that Antwerp head coach Zac Feasby envisioned.

Six errors led to nine Bryan unearned runs in a 12-0 run-rule victory over the Archers on Saturday.

“We did not start out well and let mistakes snowball,” explained Feasby, whose team fell behind 7-0 after one inning helped out by two Antwerp errors and a defensive indifference call. “We made many uncharacteristic mistakes - poor throws to first base, drops at first, errors on routine plays, not hitting cuts.”

The Archers left the bases loaded in the second and runners on second and third base two innings later in getting shut out for the first time all season. Meanwhile, the Golden Bears added to the lead with five runs in the fourth on just one base knock. The first six Bryan batters of the frame reached base without the benefit of a hit on an error, a walk, an error, two more free passes and another error.

For the game, three Antwerp hurlers surrendered just seven hits but walked six and hit a batter in the five-inning affair.

Cole Seslar hit a double while Luke Krouse, Chase Clark and Austin Lichty all contributed singles for Prep Baseball Report's 12th-rated Division IV team in the state off Bryan pitcher Zach Pittman. The senior right-hander struck out five and walked just one while hitting two batters in helping the Golden Bears, which defeated Tinora 5-1 a night earlier, improve to 14-8 on the season.

Antwerp now sets its sights on a Green Meadows Conference championship with a visit to Tinora on Monday in a battle of unbeaten league foes before hosting either Stryker or Pettisville in Division IV sectional final action on Thursday.

“On a positive note, we got to go play a good team and saw good pitching that should help prepare us for games moving forward,” pointed out Feasby after the Archers saw a seven-game winning streak come to an end in falling to 14-5 on the campaign. “Hopefully, the game was an eye opener for us and we learn from it.”
