Ethan Foltz connected on a 3-pointer with 1:40 left to play to give Paulding a one-point lead and the host Panthers held on to defeat Tinora 44-43 in the consolation contest of the State Bank Holiday Classic on Tuesday night, snapping an eight-game losing streak by Brian Miller’s squad.

Wauseon beat Cardinal Stritch 47-45 in the championship game.

“These guys are relieved to play four solid quarters,” noted the Paulding head coach, whose team trailed 15-13 after the first period, 24-21 at halftime and 39-36 through three. “We figured this would be tight and until half it was. They were able to stretch it to nine, but Peyton Adams hit a couple big 3s in the second half and Ethan hit the big one to give us the one-point margin and we held on at the end.”

Foltz tallied 12 points to pace Paulding, which connected on 19-41 for 46 percent on field-goal attempts in improving to 2-8 on the year. Adams canned one 3-ball in each of the second, third and fourth quarters to score 10 points for the Panthers while Luke Zartman chipped in eight points and Isaac Reeb six.

“We played solid defense in the last nine seconds and grabbed the rebound to end it,” Miller noted. “It was a good team win.”

Luke Harris knocked down five 3-pointers and led the Rams with 15 points. Lance Rinkel added 10 points for Tinora, which was 17-41 from the field for 41 percent while missing all three free-throw shots in falling to 2-8 on the season.

The Rams outrebounded Paulding 20-18 while the Panthers, which were 1-3 at the foul line, committed six turnovers and Tinora seven.

Paulding is back in action on Jan. 7 at home against Edgerton before traveling to Liberty Center the next evening. Tinora is off until Jan. 7 when the Rams host Wayne Trace in GMC play.
