MILLER CITY - Miller City broke a 2-2 deadlock with an eight-run fourth inning and went on to a 12-2 six-inning run-rule win over Paulding on Thursday.

“We hit a few balls hard and had a few that were just hit in the right spot,” Miller City coach Dusty Pester said. “Everything seemed to go our way that inning.”

Caleb Niese had a two-run single in the fourth while Mason Rieman, Brendan Barlage and CJ Lehman all had RBI singles for Miller City, which had six hits while taking advantage of three walks and two hit-by-pitches in the frame.

“We misplayed a ball in right field that turned into a hit which allowed two runs to come in and then the floodgates opened after that,” reflected Paulding head coach Ben Barton to the fourth inning. “It went from a really good game to over in a matter of five or six batters”

An Ethan Foltz double started a two-run Paulding second but the Wildcats tied it up in the third featuring an Austin Ruhle double and singles from Caleb Niese, Caleb Warnimont and Brendan Barlage.

Warnimont allowed one earned run in the complete-game victory for Miller City, not permitting a Paulding hit after a Kane Jones leadoff single in the fourth.

“Caleb did a nice job for us,” Pester pointed out. “He threw 71 percent of his pitches for strikes tonight and kept us in the game until the big inning offensively in the fourth.”

Paulding could manage just three hits in the game and now has six over the past two outings.

“We’re still not hitting,” Barton said. “Our approaches have to get back to where they were when we were scoring. We’ve been working on that a lot in practice and we have three games and a practice to figure it out before the tournament.”

Brendan Barlage had three singles to pace a 13-hit attack for the Wildcats, which scored their final two runs in the sixth on an Evan Niese RBI double and a Rieman bases-loaded walk.

Now winners of four straight, Miller City stands at 12-6 on the season while Paulding fell below .500 at 10-11.

“Ben does an outstanding job with his team and I have a ton of respect for the program he is building,” Pester concluded. “I was proud of the way my kids competed and approached this game.”
