ANTWERP – The “Pumpkin Smash” volleyball tournament was recently played at the MAC Gym. Four league teams returned to join four new participants at the gym this year.

League teams Paulding, Fairview, Edgerton Maroon and Edgerton Gold joined two teams each from New Haven, Indiana St. John Catholic School and two from Tinora.

Tinora Green started off the day playing Paulding. The three-set match set the tone for the competitive day as outstanding play prevailed. Paulding won the first set 25-21 but Tinora came to life and won the last two sets 25-15, 15-10.

In the opposite bracket, Edgerton Maroon handled St. John Navy 25-11, 25-20. In the other first round games, St. John Gold took out a scrappy Fairview team in three sets 25-22, 12-25, 15-6, while Edgerton Gold made quick work of Tinora White 25-11, 25-9.

In semi-final play, Edgerton Gold then won the battle of gold teams making quick work of St. John Gold 25-12, 25-17.

Edgerton Maroon and Tinora Green stretched out to three sets with Edgerton winning set one 25-17. Tinora answered back winning set two 27-25, but Edgerton proved that was only a fluke, dominating game three 15-1 to set up the all-Edgerton final.

Edgerton Gold knocked off Edgerton Maroon in two final sets 25-11, 25-13 to claim the 2018 Pumpkin Smash championship. The Edgerton championship ended a dominant two-year championship run by Tinora.

In other consolation games, Paulding beat St. John Navy 25-11, 25-14 only to fall to St. John Gold 26-24, 25-17. Fairview only needed two sets to win over Tinora White 25-12, 25-17. Fairview went on to defeat Tinora Green in another two-set match 27-25, 25-22. Fairview kept the momentum, winning the next match over St. John Gold in three competitive sets, losing the first 22-25, before taking the final two 25-7, 15-13 to end the day at 3-1 in third place. Tinora White got one win on the day, upending St. John Navy 25-13, 25-16.
