VAN WERT – Trailing 8-7 entering the bottom of the seventh, Van Wert scored a single run in the seventh to tie the game and then won it in the bottom of the eighth for a 9-8 victory over Wayne Trace in high school baseball action Monday night.

With the game tied at 7-7, the Raiders jumped in front with a run in the top of the sixth for an 8-7 advantage.

After the Cougars were scoreless in the sixth and Wayne Trace was scoreless in the seventh, Van Wert scratched across a run in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings tied at 8-8.

The Cougars then won the game in the eight, getting a walk-off single from Turner Witten to wrap up the 9-8 victory.

Wayne Trace struck first in the game with a single run in the first before Van Wert tied it at 1-1 in the second.

Inning number three saw both teams find their offense as Wayne Trace plated five runs compared to the Cougars’ four, giving the Raiders a 6-5 lead after three innings.

The red, white and blue extended the margin to 7-5 in the top of the fifth only to see Van Wert score twice in the home half in tying the contest at 7-7.

Ethan Rupert recorded the victory for Van Wert, tossing three innings in relief and limiting Wayne Trace to three hits, an unearned run and a walk.

Cale Winans took the loss for Wayne Trace, allowing three hits, four runs (two earned) and five walks in three frames.

Luke Wessell recorded two singles and a double for the Cougars while also driving in two runs. Ethan Rupert posted two singles and double with Turner Witten, Aiden Pratt and T.J. Stoller recording a single each. Ries Wise also had a double for Van Wert.

Tucker Antoine paced Wayne Trace with three singles while Cooper Wenzlick and Brendon Bidlack both added a pair of singles. Carter Baksa chipped in a double for the Raiders with Kyle Slade and Dane Moore posting singles. Cale Winans also had a single and a double for the red, white and blue.
