VAN WERT — The Vantage Career Center Board of Education met for its March meeting on Thursday.

Director Benjamin Winans reported to the board that recent efforts to showcase the school are paying off with higher application numbers.

“I think between our Sophomore Visit Day, which we did on February 2, we had 850 students in the building and then our open house evening where students were able to come back with their parents, meet the instructors, tour the building, see what it’s like here each day and I think the employers that were here it was valuable for the parents to be able to see that once their student comes here, there’s an opportunity for them to then go into the workforce and be gainfully employed,” Winans said.

Winans was excited about the increased interest in the school.

“We’ve seen this year, compared to last year an uptick in the number of applications that were received at this point. We’ve gotten 344 applications from sophomores at our home schools so that is just a little bit more than what we’ve seen in the past,” Winans said.

Winans indicated that five areas already have a waiting list including criminal justice, health technology, welding, cosmetology, and early childhood development.

Vantage staffers will now sift through the applications to select the students that will be admitted to the various programs in the fall.

The board also heard from Larry Davis the Auto Tech Instructor at Vantage as well as students Jayce Schimmoeller (Lincolnview High School) and Athena Fetters (Parkway High School).

Davis outlined what the students learn in both their junior and senior years and the students discussed why they’re involved in the program.
