HAVILAND – The Wayne Trace Local Board of Education met last Monday, Nov. 20 with new board member Kori Stoller present.

Several items were approved including an increase in the daily pay rate for substitute teachers, the purchase of a new van, and approving the change of date for the annual Washington D.C. trip for eighth graders.

Stoller was elected to the school board on Nov. 7 for a term beginning Jan. 1, 2018, and was appointed on Nov. 10 to fill the vacated seat by board member Perry Sinn, who passed away. The appointed term will be completed on Dec. 31, 2017 followed by Stoller’s elected term commencing on Jan 1.

During the meeting there were several individuals and groups commended for their leadership at the school.

Students, teachers and principals were recognized for organizing and leading the annual Veterans’ Day assemblies at all three buildings.

The board also commended Sharon Spinner, Angie Stokes, Joni Wenninger, and the performing Arts Association for organizing and leading the third annual Fine Arts Festival that was held on Nov. 11.

The third group that received recognition and commended for a job well done were all the members of the competition choir and marching band for their performances at the fine arts festival.

In other business, one resolution was passed to approve a list of consent items. The board:

• accepted the resignation of RoseAnn Hall as head cook at Wayne Trace Junior/Senior High School effective June 1, 2018.

• approved Chad Goeltzenleuchter as the assistant junior high wrestling coach for the 2017-18 school year; Rob Long and Ruger Goeltzenleuchter as wrestling volunteer coaches; Justin Speice, junior high boys volunteer coach and Gage Critten, freshman basketball volunteer coach.

• approved overnight trips for the high school wrestling team on Dec. 15-16, 2017; Jan. 19-20, 2018; Jan. 26-27, 2018.

• amended the previously approved 2017-18 school calendar and excluded Oct. 20, 2017 as a school day.

• approved the annual Washington, D.C. trip on April 17-20, 2018, not May 6-10 as previously approved.

• Increased the rate of pay for substitute teachers to $90 per day starting Jan. 1, 2018.

• approved a policy and plan for identification and services of children who are gifted.

• approved the assessment of the District Wellness policy.

• modified several school board policies to reflect changes in state and federal laws.

• approved the purchase of a 2018 Ford Transit van from Integrity Ford at a price of $28,585.

• approved the job description for Educational Tutor at Divine Mercy Catholic School which will be paid with appropriate funds received through Wayne Trace Local Schools.

Prior to the board meeting, a 15-minute records commission meeting was held.

A public hearing was held at the beginning of the regular meeting for the purpose of receiving public input and ideas concerning the 2018-19 school calendar. No one from the public attending the meeting.
