The scheduling gurus couldn’t have drawn it up any better. The final week of the girl’s high school basketball season is upon us and the final game of the regular season comes Thursday for the Green Meadows Conference participants. With one game to go we have a three-way tie for the title with two of the teams from Paulding County.
The last title for Wayne Trace was 2011 when they won four consecutive GMC championships.
Antwerp’s last conference banner came in 1990, while Hicksville has waited the longest with their last title dating back to 1975.
With all the finals scheduled for Thursday, Wayne Trace closes out the regular season on the road at Tinora (3-3, 12-8). The Lady Raiders, with an impressive overall record of 18-2 and a top ten state ranking have but one senior in 6-foot-1 Danae Myers. The second leading scorer in the area at 16.3, Myers and company look to share the title and make a deep run in the upcoming tournament. Myers also collects nearly 11 boards a contest.
Also in double digits for the Raiders is Claire Sinn at 12.8 along with 3.3 steals, and three assists a game with teammate Brooke Sinn coming up with nearly three steals a game.
Gracie Gudakunst is shooting a respectable 80 percent at the foul line for the Raiders hitting 36-of-45.
For the other Paulding County team, who is a surprise to many, the Antwerp Archers will enjoy their final game on their home floor as they invite the Fairview Apaches for the final showdown.
The Archers have a couple of seniors and a couple of juniors who have led the team throughout the year.
Leading the blue-and-white with a double-double is Rachel Williamson who scores at a 14.3 clip while hauling in 10 boards a contest. Williamson has added 44 3-pointers to her resumé this season, breaking the old record of 36.
The Archers are far from a one-woman show with Hope Smith averaging three steals a game and Peyton Short adding just over four assists per outing.
For Hicksville, the Lady Aces will also be at home to entertain Ayersville.
Paulding County basketball fans, let’s get out this Thursday and support the Raiders and Archers. Pick a team and show your support. Let’s pack the gym and see two county teams share the conference championship!
